My partner is a chocolate fiend—so, I first made this recipe for him nearly a decade ago as a Valentine's day treat. While it does make a great treat, it's simple and quick enough to make that you don't need a special occasion to enjoy it.

    Ingredients

Frozen Bananas: Create the creamy, sweet base for this smoothie bowl. Bananas that are frozen at peak ripeness work best here.
Cocoa Powder: Add more for a darker chocolate smoothie bowl.
Soy milk: Helps with blending and adds a touch of creaminess.

    Step-by-step Photos

Gather all your ingredients—have your chosen toppings ready so you can add them quickly after blending and have less melt time.

Add all the ingredients to a food processor. A blender can also work, but any blending tool that allows for low liquid blending is best.

Stop as needed to scape down the sides of the food processor as you blend. You can add more liquid if needed, but I recommend using as little as possible to maintain a thick soft-serve texture.

Once the mixture is smooth, you're ready to serve. Serve in pre-chilled bowls (helps it melt more slowly!) and add you favourite toppings.

    FAQS

    How many does this serve?
I like to serve this recipe as a dessert for two, but it can also be enjoyed as a more substantial dish for one. If you want to make it more of a meal, you can also add in protein powder when blending—just keep in mind that you may need to add a little more liquid and the texture will be a bit different.

Can I use a different liquid?
I always have soy milk on hand, so that's what I use. You can substitute any other milk in it's place with very similar results. In a pinch, you can also use water, but the result will be less creamy.

Can I prepare this smoothie bowl in advance?
While a regular smoothie can often be prepped in advance, smoothie bowls are best enjoyed immediately to preserve their thick, creamy, spoonable texture.

What are the best toppings for a Chocolate Banana Smoothie Bowl?
I like fresh fruit like strawberries or raspberries to balance the richness of the smoothie bowl. Granola is great for some crunchy texture. Other options include shredded coconut, chopped nuts, or a drizzle of nut butter (like homemade sunflower butter). For extra indulgence, add chocolate chunks or chocolate sauce.

    Ingredients

    • 3 frozen bananas (broken up or chopped)
    • 2 Tablespoons cocao powder
    • 2-3 Tablespoons Soy milk
    • Choice of toppings

    Instructions

    1. Add 2 small bowls (for two servings) or one larger bowl (one serving) into the freezer to chill and prep any topping ingredients that you want to add at the end. Having those ready so you can act quickly will help keep your smoothie bowl thick and frozen longer.

    2. Add frozen bananas, cocoa powder, and 2 tablespoons of soy milk into a food processor. You can also use a blender, but the key is that whatever you use should be able to blend a thick substance, so that you can add as little liquid as possible.

    3. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. If needed add more soy milk.

    4. Serve up your smoothie bowl into the chilled bowls, add your toppings, and enjoy immediately.

    Recipe Notes

      • If you're freezing your own bananas, choose bananas that are nice and ripe for optimal sweetness.
      • For a darker chocolate smoothie bowl, add more cocoa powder.
